Half the world's population, 4 billion people, are women and girls. Science, design, technology & engineering use a caucasian 155lb male as the design standard. Women are considered as deviations from this norm and left out of the design process across multiple industries. This is called gender bias in design.
Beware if you are a woman, this is the rage inducing part...
“Women are half of the global population and yet brands are still failing to create products that are made with their real needs in mind.”
“When a woman wears a traditional men’s team jersey, they look like they are wearing a tent.” Informa “VitaFoods Insights” 11/22; New York Times 2010
In the NFL, MLS, NBA, MLB, NHL and NASCAR, , females account for between 37% and 45% of the total market. Furthermore, women purchase 46% of official NFL merchandise, spend 80% of all sports apparel dollars, yet 'Shrink it and Pink it' limits our apparel choices for men's teams to this and for women's sports teams to this.
At FanGirl ,We are on a mission to bring fashion to the stands for female fans by creating sports merch that is attractive and fitted for all sized women, because women are not smaller men. See our collection here
Despite women buying 50% of vehicles and influencing 80% of car buying decisions, U.S. regulations do not mandate crash testing with female dummies in the driver’s seat.
Standard seat belts can ride up on a pregnant woman’s belly, with a corresponding increased risk of fetal injury. Car crashes remain the number one cause of fetal death related to maternal trauma, with no pregnant crash-test dummy being used in government safety tests, and nothing being done about the seatbelt.
Since crash test dummies are based on the 'average' male, the seats don't give way to women's lighter body weights. This makes women 3x more vulnerable to whiplash. Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez
75% hospital workers are women, yet
Scrubs are designed for 6 foot tall man.
This design is too long and too tight in the hips for women, and the tops have a large gapping v-neck. The medical industry has provided adjustable unisex as a solution but unisex is ultimately made with the Shrink it and Pink it process, which does not fit a women's body properly.
Even though Employers are legally required to buy protective equipment to protect their medical staff, 82% of women report their PPE is not the proper fit. That drops to 1% for men.
Women surgeons struggle to find equipment that fits smaller bodies: “As a female trainee, you recognize that the equipment and the things that you’re learning how to do aren’t quite right for your stature or your body size, but you adapt because … this is the equipment that is given to you. You adjust or make do.” Full Article
Can you fit your keys, wallet, and phone in the same pocket? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are most likely a man. If you answered no, then you are most likely one of many women struggling with a lack of pockets or minuscule pocket sizes that barely fit a finger. The average pockets in women's jeans are 48% shorter and 6.5% narrower than men's pockets.
Because of the male-dominated fashion industry, much of women’s clothing contains tiny or no pockets.
Buttons are "Stuck" in the past:
In the Victorian and Renaissance eras, women were often dressed by their servants, who were most likely right-handed, hence the button placement on the left made it easier for a servant to dress the lady. That's how it started.
For Zippers, placement is based on our dominant hand. An estimated 70 to 95 percent of people in the world are believed to be right-handed, and why a majority of zippers are made on the right side of the garment.
YKK offers open end zippers for both left inserts and right inserts, so you may choose whichever side you feel fits your preferences best. Alas a solution!
According to the National Fire Protection Agency, PPE fit issues result in women firefighters having a 33 percent higher risk of being injured on the job.
“Imagine you’re working 12-hour days for 14 days straight on a wildfire, hiking through the woods, always squatting and lifting, while wearing pants that are too tight because the next size up is too big. The pressure around your stomach builds to the point where, by the end of the day, you’re just relieved to take them off. Nothing ever fit right.”
Police Uniforms
Innovative solutions to ill-fitting police uniforms are urgently needed (again). Dr Camilla De Camargo discusses the social, physical and mental health and safety repercussions of the current ‘unisex’ police uniform.
The design of the women’s police uniform is fundamental to their integration, acceptance, health, and safety in policing.
Did you know the average circumference of a woman’s hand is about 1 to 2 inches smaller than the average man’s? Actually, does Silicon Valley know? The problem of gender bias in tech design is systemic.
“Most of the people who’ve been designing smart phones are men, so they’ve been designing for the male hand size", Caroline Criado Perez. "Invisible Women"
Wireless earbuds aren’t made with women in mind, and it shows: The average adult woman’s ear canal diameter is 17% smaller than the average adult male. We hear better, and have smaller ear holes. Seems like a pretty big thing missed by almost every tech reviewer on the planet…a tech product that has become a basic requirement for the modern woman causes pain and anxiety. Full Article
Running Shoes are designed around foot-shaped molds called lasts, which until now, were based only on molds of men’s feet. When women cram their feet into a shoe designed around a male last, it’s going to be 70 percent tighter in the forefoot and 30 percent looser in the heel. That causes all kinds of forefoot issues: Morton’s neuromas, bunions, blisters, and up the chain, including increased impact on knees and hips. Full Article
